Knowledge of Radiation Hazards and Safety Practices Among Paramedical Personnel: Evidence from a Tertiary Care Hospital

Background: Ionizing radiation is essential in modern medicine but poses significant occupational risks. Awareness of radiation hazards and safety protocols among paramedical personnel is vital. This study assessed knowledge of radiation protection among radiology staff in a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted at District Headquarter Hospital, Gujranwala (June–November 2024). Using convenience sampling, 150 paramedical personnel completed a structured questionnaire assessing demographics, 13 knowledge items, and attitudes. Knowledge scores were classified as good (≥75%), average (50–74%), and poor (<50%). Data were analyzed using SPSS 26, and associations were tested using Chi-square with Cramer’s V.
Results: Most participants had poor knowledge (43.3%), while 40.7% showed good and 16.0% average knowledge. Institutional training strongly predicted higher knowledge scores (χ²=28.3, p<0.001, Cramer’s V=0.47). Significant associations were also found with designation, experience, and department.
Conclusion: Radiation protection awareness among paramedical staff was inadequate. Institutional training significantly improved knowledge levels. Regular, structured, and mandatory training programs are needed to strengthen radiation safety culture and minimize occupational risks.
