I would like to draw attention to the complex relationship between childhood trauma and adult relationship satisfaction specifically among young adults who are college and university students. The study reveals that childhood trauma is significantly associated with lower satisfactory adult relationships and higher chances of attachment insecurity (1). Importantly, attachment not only mediates the relationship but also influence the amount of reception of social support individually (2).
The important aspect is that social support plays a moderating role in amplifying the effect of childhood trauma on attachment levels. This suggests that trauma may be a shared experience, but its effect can differ depending upon the emotional and social support available to an individual. Attachment works as a bridge that links early adversities to later relationship outcomes making it a main focus are for mental health interventions (3).
